Tractatus Logico-poeticus

                          Wovon man nicht sprechen kann,
                              darüber muss man schweigen.

                                                Ludwig Wittgenstein

If you are not you
you are not necessarily
someone else.

By the same token,
if you are you,
you are not a metaphor.

You may be no more
than a figure of speech.
And no less.

In that case what difference
whether your language
be public or private?

Ponder it—whoever you are or are not.
Where's the rub? Cat got your tongue?

Gabriela Mistral: La Pajita/ The Mote Of Straw

Ésta que era una niña de cera;

¡Alléguense a mirar cómo he perdido entera,
en este lagrimón, mi fiesta verdadera!

Gabriela Mistral

The Mote Of Straw

This one who was a child of wax--
but she wasn't a child of wax at all,
she was a sheaf standing tall in her years.

But she wasn't really a sheaf--
she was an upright marigold in bloom.

But she was not at all a flower either--
she was a tiny beam of sunlight on the window.
No, she was not even a tiny beam of light,
but a mote of straw in my dear little eyes.

Come closer, all of you, and look—see
how entirely she has shed in this one unscanty teardrop
my unfeigned holiday.

The Trees Of Managua/ Los árboles de Managua

Dedicated to the esteemed and learned Dieter Stadler

                           “Who hears the remorse
                             of the criminal auto?”
                                                Pablo Neruda (tr. EAC)

Twilight rises
and on the highway
the trees of Managua
bloom with electricity,
mocking the crowd
of prisoners detained
in rush hour traffic.

Los Árboles de Managua

Dedicado al estimado y erudito Señor Dieter Stadler

                                  "Quién oye los remordimientos
                                   Del automóvil criminal?"
                                                            Pablo Neruda
Al atardecer
y en la carretera
los árboles de Managua
florezcan con electricidad
burlándose de la muchedumbre
detenida en el tráfico de hora punta.

Ambrose Bierce:The Flying Machine/La máquina voladora

An Ingenious Man who had built a flying-machine invited a great concourse of people to see it go up. At the appointed moment, everything being ready, he boarded the car and turned on the power. The machine immediately broke through the massive substructure upon which it was builded, and sank out of sight into the earth, the aeronaut springing out barely in time to save himself.

"Well," said he, "I have done enough to demonstrate the correctness of my details. The defects," he added, with a look at the ruined brick-work, "are merely basic and fundamental."

Upon this assurance the people came forward with subscriptions to build a second machine.

Ambrose Bierce

José Rizal: A las flores de Heidelberg/ To The Flowers Of Heidelberg

¡Id a mi patria, id extranjeras flores

cantos de amor en su natal idioma;

Llevad, llevad ¡oh flores!
amor a mis amores
paz a mi país y a su fecunda tierra,
fé a sus hombres, virtud a sus mujeres,
salud a dulces seres
que el paternal sagrado hogar encierra…

Cuando toquéis la playa,
el beso que os imprimo
depositadlo en alas de la brisa,
porque con ella vaya,
y bese cuando adoro, amo y estimo.

Mas ¡ay! llegaréis, flores,
conservaréis, quizás, vuestros colores;
pero lejos del patrio, heroico suelo,
a quién debeis la vida
perderéis los olores;

To The Flowers of Heidelberg

Go to my homeland, foreigners' flowers,
sown by a wayfarer along the road,
and under that blue sky,
who guards all my loves,
recount of the pilgrim
the fealty he cherishes for his fatherland.

Go and say—say that when dawn
first opened your petals
by the frozen river Neckar
you saw him silent at your side
contemplating his home's own forever Spring.

Say that when sunrise,
that robs you of your scent,
was whispering love songs in your ears
he too was murmuring songs of love in his native tongue;
that when the sun gilds the summit of Mount Koenigsthul
in the morning and with his warm light brings the valley to life,
the forest and the fastness--he hails the same sun
dawning there blazing at its zenith in his native land.

And tell of the day
when he gathered you
among the ruins of a feudal castle
along the trail beside the Neckar
or in the shaded forest.
Tell what he told you
when with greatest care
he pressed your pliant petals
between the pages of a second-hand book.

Carry—carry, oh flowers,
love to my loves.
Peace to my country
and its fertile earth,
faith to its men, virtue to its women,
and health and wellness to all sweet beings
which the sacred hearth of homeland enfolds.

When you touch upon the beach,
the kiss I put on your lips—sow it
in the wings of the breeze, so that
I might fly with her and kiss them when
I come upon what I worship, love, and cherish.

But-oh!--you will bring with you and preserve
perhaps your colors,
but far from the heroic soil of your home,
to whom you owe your life,
you will lose your scents.
For fragrance is soul and neither forsakes
nor forgets the heaven whose light saw its birth.

ZOOT!/¡ZOOT!

"¿Y el jale que conseguiste de guachador?
¿Qué todavía te forguetean tus relativos?".

                                               Germán Valdés (Tin-tan)

ZOOT!—in a suit so sharp it scratches glass.

ZOOT!—with a truth so bitter it makes you laugh.

ZOOT!—What's a pachuco like you doing in an Anglo Empire like the EEUU?

ZOOT!—Right between their eyes!

E. A. Costa

¡ZOOT!

"¿Y el puesto que conseguiste de velador?
                     ¿Qué?--¡Todavía te olvidan tus parientes!"

                                             Germán Valdés (Tin-Tan)

¡ZOOT!-- en un traje tan agudo que él raya el cristal.

¡ZOOT!-- con una verdad tan amarga que te hace reír.

¡ZOOT!-- ¿Qué hace un pachuco como tú en un Imperio Anglo como los EEUU?

¡ZOOT!--¡Justo entre ceja y ceja!

Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai)

“Being an artist means not having to avert one’s eyes.”

                                                                               Akira Kurosawa

Haiku

Haiku is a smooth stone
from an ice-cold mountain stream
polished for eons.

Stain

There is strength in rain
falling warm on fertile plain:
in dark stain promise.

Ya-mori

Motion on the wall.
I turn and the gecko freezes.
Easily escapes.

Urge

Urge to classify.
Machine repeating machine.
Scissor fingers tire.

Trial Of Clay

Program is not key.
Tune spirit to fire raku
merging with green tea.

Dimension

Numbering dimension:
start with all unsaid within--
count out and backward
.

Choice

All choices are false.
Cherry blossoms rise and fall.
Dancers wear cosmos.

for Gekko Japonicus or Schlegel's Gecko, named after Hermann Schlegel,
author with Philipp Franz von Siebold of Fauna Japonica (1845-1850).
Raku (楽焼 raku-yaki) is a clay high in sand content specially fired and

“Raku” means enjoyment and comes from “Jurakudai” a palace built by

used. Stain, Yamori, Urge, Trial of Clay, Dimension and Choice are from
“If Love” (EAC, January, 2009). Haiku appears for the first time here. Kurosawa's
film is set in 1586 in the Japanese Warring States period during the dominance
of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified the country and brought the civil strife
to an end.
