N.B.: This is not a literal translation in the main, but an attempt to bring out one cryptotype of many, in a poem that ranges from an echo of the ancient Greek Sappho to a famous poem of Vicente Huidobro.
Who is blue when moon is full before the sun drowns in silhouettes etched by treetops consumed in the fire shadows of western skies where die days one by one in slithering timeless night? Do you hear the bright snow sliding into gray? Do you see the rain? Do you caress her tearful tresses and feel moist earth under denuded sole? [EAC July 2013]
To-night
The moon is a curving flower of gold,
The sky is still and blue;
The moon was made for the sky to hold,
And I for you;
The moon is a flower without a stem,
The sky is luminous;
Eternity was made for them,
To-night for us.
Sara Teasdale
Antonio Machado
Countryside
The afternoon is dying
as a humble hearth is quenched.
There--over the mountains
a few embers remain.
And, oh--that broken tree on the white road
makes for weeping from deepest grief.
Two branches on the wounded trunk and on
each a black and withered leaf!
Are you weeping?...Among golden poplars--
far, far away--the shade of love is waiting for you.
